Who We Are
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an alliance of more than 600 local Affiliates and 48 State Organizations who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need.
What We Do
One out of every five families has a loved one who suffers from a major psychiatric illness (brain disorder) such as schizophrenia or bipolar illness (manic depression). Millions more suffer from depression, anxiety, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), and PSTD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). NAMI Charleston Area is an organization that values all members of the family affected by issues related to mental health. We provide programs for individuals with a mental health condition and their family members, friends, and others who provide care and support for them. Our presentations, support groups, and education classes are free.
We rely on gifts and donations to provide these valuable programs to those in need.
